Obituary for Vernon George Veino

Vernon George Veino
Newburgh – Vernon George Veino, 84, passed away to be with the Lord February 13, 2017. He was born September 1, 1932, in New York City, the son of Berton C. and Sarah A. (Nass) Veino.

Vern attended school at the one room school house in Newburgh, and then on to Hampden Academy. He then served in the U. S. Army for two years, where he finished a course as a heavy duty mechanic. He returned home and married Marion (Gibbs) Veino. They were together for 60 years. Vern worked at many places in Bangor, including M L Coffin, many years for Southard’s of Bangor, the Bangor Air Base on heavy duty machines, Central Maine Diesel, and others. He was known as one of the best mechanics. He enjoyed gardening and trips to Nova Scotia. His hobbies were woodworking, making wooden toys and giving them away to kids. He always made enough of each so all the grandchildren could have one and then the great grandchildren. He sure was a wonderful family man. There was nothing he would not do for his wife and family.

Vernon was a wonderful husband and father. He loved to work and continued working full time, never fully retiring. His joys in life were his family and his gigantic garden. He always planted a huge garden to provide fresh vegetables for his entire family. Vern enjoyed taking his family out for dinner on Friday nights and parking near the airport so they could watch the planes land. He would tell his children what kind of plane it was and what it was used for. He and Marion also raised their two grandchildren, Andrew and Jennifer, from ages 3 and 5, treating them like their own children. Vern had a strong love for animals and loved his small Japanese Chin dog, ChinChin very much.

In addition to his parents, Vern was predeceased by a brother, Herbert; two sisters, Vera, and baby sister, Selma; and infant brother, Eddie. He is survived by his wife, Marion; three daughters, Bonita Sara (Veino) Gomm and husband James Gomm, of Newburgh, Cynthia Mae (Veino) Rollins and fiancée Adam Sutton of Bangor, and Sheila Marie (Veino) Jacobsen, of Bangor; seven grandchildren, Richard Gomm and wife Heather of Dixmont, Crystal (Gomm) Carson and husband Jason of Milford, Emily (Gomm) Whittaker, Greg Rollins and wife Arin, of Veazie, Scott Rollins and fiancée Amanda York, of Bangor, Andy Jacobsen of Newburgh, and Jennifer (Veino) Jandreau and husband Wade of York; eight great grandchildren, Teegan Carson of Milford, Hayden, Seth and Luke Rollins of Veazie, Hannah and Meadow Whittaker, of Brewer, Daniel Gomm of Dixmont, and Charleigh York of Bangor.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Vern’s life will be held 2-4 p.m., Friday February 17, 2017 at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel; of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. A graveside service, with military honors, will be held later in the spring.
