Obituary for Thomas Manley Smith

Thomas Manley Smith
Hampden-Thomas M. Smith, 88, passed away peacefully March 20, 2017, at an Orono healthcare facility. He was born December 26, 1928, in Bar Harbor the son of Harry J. and Minnie E.(Elliot) Smith. Tom graduated from Rockland High School in the Class of 1947. After working for some years at H. H. Crie Co. in Rockland, he joined New England Pipe and Supply Co. in 1960 to manage its Bangor distributorship. In 1984, with the encouragement of a special friend, Tom and partner Clint Parsons founded Bangor Pipe and Supply Company. They worked hard to make the company successful, often working seven days a week. Over the years Bangor Pipe and Supply found success due to loyal customers and great employees, which Tom viewed as friends. Tom was a life member of the Knox Lodge #189 A.F. & A. M. of Rockland, member of the Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portland, Maine Consistory 32 degree, and Anah Shrine of Bangor, serving in the Provost Guard. Tom loved his family and home. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at home in Hampden or at his camp on Crawford Pond in Union. In younger years he was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, snowshoeing around the mid-coast region. Upon moving to the Bangor area he was active in the Hampden Rifle and Pistol Club and the Hampden Snowmobile Club. In later years he found great joy in traveling in the company of his friends and customers. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Nadene (Sawyer) Smith; a daughter, Shawn K. Painter and husband Jack of Coco Beach, FL; a son, Brett T. Smith and wife Amy of Brewer; four grandchildren, Thomas 'TJ' Painter, David M. Painter, Annabelle M. Smith, and Corbin T. Smith; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by all of his siblings, six brothers, Elliot, Don, Roger, Roland, Mike, and Fred; and three sisters, Helen, Carla, and Barbara.
