Obituary for Jean Eleanor Devoe

Jean E. Devoe
Orono-Bangor

Jean Eleanor Devoe of Orono and Bangor went to be with the Lord, July 5, 2017, at the age of 83 where she was greeted by her parents Henry P. Devoe and Florence Percia Morris Devoe and only brother, Dana C. Devoe. Jean was born on June 30, 1934 in Orono, where she lived in her home for 78 years before moving to Phillips Strickland House then to Orono Commons.

She graduated from Orono High School, class of 1953, and from Beal Business College in Bangor with the degree of junior accountant in 1957.

She worked in Connecticut for 3 1/2 years as a nanny for three young children.
During this time she went to New York City almost every weekend attending St. Patrick’s Cathedral and seeing many sights including the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall and the 1964 World’s Fair. Then when back in Maine she worked for professors and their wives doing various domestic work. She also cared for her mother for many years in Orono.

Jean’s love of travel was constant throughout her life. She traveled throughout the midwest U.S. for graduations and weddings as well as along the East Coast.

Jean and Florence traveled to: Holland, Austria, Switzerland, France, West Germany and Italy. She fondly remembered St. Mark’s Church in Venice, Cathedral of Milan, St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, the Roman Forum and Cathedral Santa Maria Del Fiore in Florence. They also visited Innsbruck, Austria going over the Europa bridge, Lugano & Lucerne, Switzerland and Paris, France where they ate dinner in the Eiffel Tower. Another trip took Florence and Jean to Spain and Morocco in North Africa where they visited the famous Casbah. They also took a 17 day train tour of British Columbia.

She belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Newman Center in Orono, Holy Family in Old Town and St. John’s in Bangor as well as the Daughters of Isabella for 40 years.

Jean had a lovely smile and loved being with older people. She was known for her walks in Orono often bringing cookies she made to the police and firefighters. She loved playing the piano and listening to symphony orchestras. She was a long-standing member of the Orono Senior Citizens and the Orono Historical Society.

Jean will be missed by her friends, especially Woody and Marlene, and her family:
Her loving son Patrick Buchanan, daughter-in-law Tamara and her two grandsons: Steven and Bryan, all of Stratford, Connecticut.

Her nephews: Joseph Devoe, wife Suzie, and their sons Parker and Barron all of Nyack, New York. Robert Devoe, wife Martha, and their daughters Sarah and Mary of Holliston, Massachusetts. Paul Devoe, wife Kimber, and their son Lincoln and daughter Audrey of Phoenix, Arizona.

Nieces: Mary Devoe Marcle, husband Scott, and her three sons Raymond, Charles and Joshua Sawyer of Forest Hill, Maryland. Elizabeth Devoe Phillips, husband Chad, and their son Henry and daughter Ava of Portland, Oregon. Therese Devoe and her partner Kelly Allen of Portland, Oregon.

Relatives and friends are invited to call 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at the Orono Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 72 Main St., Orono. A Funeral Mass will be held 11 am.
