Obituary for Arthur Rodney Rowe

Arthur Rodney Rowe
Arthur “Farr” Rowe
Brewer
Arthur “Farr” Rodney Rowe, 93, died July 10, 2017 at his home in Brewer with his family by his side. He was born at home in Brewer, October 8, 1923, son of Arthur and Mellie Rowe. Farr enlisted in the US Army at the age of 18, in April of 1942. He spent 2 ½ years overseas in World War II as a member of the 69th Armored Field Artillery Battalion (45th Infantry Division) as a motorcycle messenger. He participated in five campaigns; Rome Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Naples Foggia.
He married Dorothy “Dot” MacLeod on January 21, 1946 and they had two children, Jack and Margaret Jane.
Farr’s lifelong passion was the ocean and sailing. He found great joy in spending time on his own sailboats, those of his friends, and oftentimes would lend a hand on a schooner or two.
When he returned home from the war, Farr worked with his grandfather in the family business, R.J. Smith Awning & Canvas Company in Brewer. Farr was also a talented builder and later worked building houses, including five for his family. Even at the age of 77 he could be found on top of a roof finishing up construction of a garage. He eventually went to work at Dow Air Force Base as a Maintenance Supervisor, which is where he retired.
Farr was predeceased by all his siblings, Robert “Bob” Rowe, Louise Preble, Kay “Billie” Washburn, Charlotte Wilson, and Mabel “Betty” Jacobs; and nephews, Peter Foy and Harry Wilson.
Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Dot; son, Jack Rowe of Holden; daughter, Margaret Jane McEwen of Westbrook; grandchildren, Jane Perry and husband, Joe of Bangor, Matthew Rowe and wife, Gayle of Eddington, Margo Peffer and husband, Curt of Gorham, Morgan McEwen of Boston; great grandchildren, Grace Rowe, Joseph Perry, Kyle Perry, Cabot Arthur Peffer and Jocelyn Dorothy Peffer.
A memorial service will be held noon Friday, July 14, 2017, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Brookings-Smith Reception Rooms, immediately following the service. Interment will follow at Pine Tree Cemetery, Eddington. Donations may be made in his memory, if desired to the charity of your choice.
Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
