Obituary for Arthur Peter Brountas

Arthur Peter Brountas
Bangor and Brewer - Arthur Peter Brountas, 90, husband for 61 years to Maria Gianibas Brountas, passed away peacefully at home on October 31, 2017. He was born August 12, 1927, the son of the late Peter Brountas and Penelope Spiropoulos Brountas of 294 Main Street, Bangor.
As a child Arthur held many jobs to help support the family during the depression. One was selling newspapers which gave a hint to his future entrepreneurial spirit. He had signs in the Main Street business, “3 cents or leave the bacon.” On many occasions he was paid with actual bacon. While on his regular route, young Arthur raced to the scene of the infamous Al Brady shoot out. He was quite elated that a rare 2nd edition was available for sale, creating an opportunity for increased earnings.
Arthur graduated from Bangor High School in 1946 and then went on to serve our country as part of the occupational forces in Japan under General MacArthur. Arthur believed in Bangor’s future and endeavored optimistically when he took over Peter’s Spa, after his father’s passing in 1948. In 1950, Arthur formed a business partnership with his brother, George P. Brountas. Together they operated Peter’s Candlelighter Restaurant and the Greyhound Bus Terminal from 1950-1982. Their partnership proved successful and enabled the Brountas businessmen to purchase the McGuire Block on the corner of Main and Union Streets. Arthur followed in the footsteps of his older brothers, Nicholas and George Brountas, by serving on the Bangor City Council for two terms, 1974-1982. Arthur became the third distinguished Brountas brother to serve as Mayor, serving from 1978-1979. From 1982 until his death, Arthur, along with his son Peter A. Brountas, ran the Tavern and Brountas Rental Company.
As the son of Greek immigrants, Arthur understood what it was like to be in a new country and the importance of contributing through hard work. He often slept in his car while waiting for late bus arrivals. When the surprise Blizzard of ’62 hit, Arthur left the confines of his Savage Street home, sacrificing his boot along the way, to walk downtown to aid stranded customers. His generosity provided much for the weary travelers. Arthur remained dedicated to his community by tirelessly serving those he encountered.
Another powerful storm played a prominent role in the forging of Arthur’s engagement to his betrothed Maria. On a trip to Boston for their engagement party, he along with his Mother, were challenged by a severe snowstorm. Although accumulating snow deterred many vehicles, Arthur’s bull-like determination would not accept failure in his love quest. With luck and fate, as well as a fist full of cash, he approached a plow truck driver for assistance. Soon, he was blazing the trail on the hazardous roads with a long line of cars safely behind him.
Arthur was a charismatic, vibrant Bangor icon who lit up any room he entered. He was engaging, collaborative, and genuinely valued people. He socialized frequently with his valued customers, always keen to the fact they paid the bills.
Arthur took pride in opening the doors of the Tavern each and every day, and did so until the day before his passing.
With Maria, he built a strong and loving family and ensured that all of his children had the opportunity to attend college. He and Maria instilled values in their children, and encouraged them to leave their world a better place. Although sixty-six years passed quickly since he first met his beloved Maria, Arthur steadfastly doted on her daily and expressed his desire that she want for nothing. His cherished days were when she gently held his face for a tender kiss.
Arthur had a love of food. His predilection for dessert was unsurpassed by his desire for whipped cream and Klondike bars. He was a long suffering Red Sox fan who was pleasantly surprised with their 2004 World Series Championship.
Arthur was a life-long and dedicated member of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church, founded by his father and mother. He was an active member of many civic and fraternal organizations including the Bangor Noon Time Rotary, Anah Shriners, Jesters, Job Corp advisory committee, and a Corporator of Bangor Savings Bank. Arthur was a recipient of several honors including awards from the Masons, Job Corp, Rotary (Paul Harris Fellow), and the Shriners.
Arthur is survived by his wife Maria of Bangor; daughter Penny Brountas Rees of Brewer; daughter Jean A. Brountas and Gary T. Kellner of Westwood, MA.; son Peter Arthur Brountas and Debbie Michaud of Brewer, grandson Brett Christopher Rees and wife Kara Kelley of Cambridge, MA; grandson Kyle Nicholas Rees of Bangor; granddaughter Jessica B. Brountas of Bangor; A.J. Bustard of Brewer; brother Paul Peter Brountas and sister-in-law Lynn T. Brountas of Weston and Chatham, MA.; sister-in-law Helen Brountas of Bangor; niece Joanne Brountas Levine of Medway, MA.; nephew and niece George and Sharon Leakos of Brewer; close friends Lloyd Willey of Hampden; Sara Jane Cox of Bangor, Linda Boyle of Glenburn, and Paul and Martha Newman of Bangor; as well as many wonderful Brountas, Nichols, Leakos, and Gianibas nieces and nephews.
Arthur is predeceased by his brother, Nicholas P. Brountas; sister, Helen Brountas Nichols; brother, George P. Brountas; sister, Georgia Brountas Leakos; and son-in-law, Kim R. Rees.
Arthur’s love and devotion to his family and community remains ever present and will remain eternally.
