Obituary for Jared Wooddell Haslett

Jared Wooddell Haslett
Jared W. Haslett
Bangor

Jared Wooddell Haslett, 87, passed away peacefully at home in the early morning of Monday, March 12. His wife of 52 years, Diane, cared for him for many years, with help from sons, Ethan and Ben, extended family and several very kind home health care providers, as he battled dementia.

In addition to Diane, Ethan and Ben, he is survived by his sister, Margaret Lowry, sons, Jonathan and Joel, and daughter, Jeanne, and their spouses and families, including 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Mildred, his sister, Suzanne, his brother, David, and his first wife, Winona.

Born in Akron, Ohio, Jerry lived for many years in Chicago, Illinois. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Wheaton College in Illinois, as well as a master’s degree and all but dissertation toward a doctorate in physics at Illinois Institute of Technology. Jerry taught physics for more than 30 years at the University of Illinois, Chicago and served as the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Physics. He was resident research associate at Argonne National Labs, research physicist at Chicago Wesley Hospital and consulting physicist at Michael Reese Hospital.

Jerry’s deep interest in the works of Rudolf Steiner and his work as librarian at the Rudolf Steiner Branch of The Anthroposophical Society resulted in his extensive bibliographic work—Works of Rudolf Steiner in English Translation—used by librarians throughout the world. He also had a long history with the Chicago Waldorf School as a member of the founding parents group and served as treasurer for the school in the 70s.

Since moving to Maine in 1994, Jerry became a life member of the Pine State Amateur Radio Club and was a member of the Penobscot Conservation Society and the Eddington Salmon Club. He was a founding and active member of the Men’s Breakfast Group and several other activities at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bangor.

Memberships in various organizations include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Anthroposophical Society, Bioelectromagnetics Society, Mensa, American Radio Relay League, Sigma Pi Sigma, Sigma Xi and the Moose.

A visitation will be held Sunday, March 18, 3-5 p.m., at Brookings Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. The funeral service will be held Monday, March 19, 11 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 225 French St., Bangor, with Rev. Marguerite A. H. Steadman, Rector, officiating. Interment will be Wednesday, March 21, 2 p.m. at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, 185 Lake St., Peabody, MA. Messages and memories may be shared with the family at BrookingsSmith.com.
