Michael McNamara, 69, died May 7, 2018. He was born February 14, 1949, the beloved son of Francis L. and Annie L. (Brewer) McNamara. He graduated from Bangor High School, where he participated in sports, in 1967, and the University of Maine at Machias in 1971, where he was a member of Kappa Delta Phi fraternity. Mike made many life long friends while attending Machias. He worked for many years in the automotive aftermarket with Varney’s Auto Supply. In later years he was associated with Century 21, Queen City Real Estate, and the Mullens family.
Michael was a member of the Bangor Board of Realtors, the Maine Board of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors. He was also a member of the National Association of the Self Employed, The Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. Mike loved nature and spent much of his time outdoors. He enjoyed his camps on Phillips Lake and Spectacle Pond and his home at Daytona Beach in the winter. Mike was an avid sports fan and loved his Red Sox and Patriots.
He will be remembered for his quick wit and charismatic personality. Mike liked to make people happy. He will be missed at gatherings of family and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents and his older brother, James McNamara.
Surviving are his sister Brenda Varney and her husband Bill; nephews Tim Varney and his wife Lori, Rick Varney and his wife Jane; many other nieces and nephews, a very special nephew Michael Varney and his wife Sarah of Portland; many beloved friends, especially David and Kate Watts of Roque Bluffs.
A service to celebrate his life will be held 3 pm. Monday May 14, 2018 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, following the service.
Private interment will be in Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town.
Those wishing to remember Mike in a special way, may make donations in his memory to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mt. Hope Ave., Bangor.
